How do astronauts go to the bathroom?
A waste collector has been designed so that both males and females can use it. It has a seat belt and feet restraints to hold the astronaut on the seat. High speed air currents pull the waste into their respective receptacles. The urine is combined with other water waste and the feces is vacuum dried, chemically treated to get rid of the odor and bacteria, and stored.
How do astronauts eat in space?
Before astronauts leave the earth, they have to pack a BIG lunch. All of the food that astronauts eat in space is brought from earth because there are no grocery stores in space. Most of their food has to be prepared a special way to ensure that it can be eaten in microgravity and that it will not spoil. The most common method of preparing food for space is dehydration. Rehydratable foods have been dehydrated by freeze drying, air drying, or other methods. Dehydrated ice-cream does not have to be kept in the freezer and it feels like Styrofoam. The astronauts rehydrate the food by just putting it in their mouth or rehydrating it with water. Water is produced by the fuel cells which generate electricity from hydrogen and oxygen. Water is a by-product.
What is the moon like?
The entire surface of the moon is covered by a thin layer of dust. It's surface also has many craters, or holes, that were made by the continuous shower of meteorites. The moon has no atmosphere. It has gravity that is much less (about one-sixth) than the force of Earth's gravity. It has a lot of useful raw materials like soil, iron, and aluminum. The moon has no water and no life forms have been found.
Can people really walk on the moon?
Yes! On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first American to step foot on the moon. His words "That's one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind" have gone down in history. When astronauts go outside of the cabin, they have to wear a space suit equipped with a self-contained life support system. It provides protection from radiation and harsh temperatures.
How do astronauts take showers in space?
Astronauts probably take long and thorough baths before they go into space because they do not take showers aboard the shuttle. They have to wash up by hand. In weightlessness, water sticks to the body making it very easy to wash up. They use two sponges, one is used to soap up and the other is used to rinse off.
How do astronauts sleep in space?
In space, astronauts can't lie "down" in a bed. They sleep in sleeping bags that are strapped to a bunk to keep them from floating around the space shuttle while they are sleeping. Astronauts can sleep standing up, upside-down, or even in the air. Most astronauts choose to sleep in the sleeping bags so that they won't get dizzy.
How long does it take to get to the moon?
It takes approximately three days to get to the moon.
