Advanced Life Support (ALS) provides technologies for life-sustaining functions inside spacecraft
and planetary surface habitats. It includes controlling pressure, temperature and humidity, providing
usable water and breathable air, growing food crops, and managing wastes. Research and technology efforts
in this area focus on developing efficient and reliable systems technologies, tools, strategies, new methods,
models, and requirements for regenerative life support systems. These technologies are designed to
maintain an acceptable habitable atmosphere for the crew, provide and recover potable water, maintain
habitat thermal balance, process solid wastes, and grow crops that can provide a measure of
air and water recycling and crew food.
