Description
Objectives:

Studies have shown that bone formation ceases during space flight, that the matrix formed during flight does not mature normally, and consequently cannot mineralize normally. The cartilaginous epiphyses of the long bones of space rats have received less attention, even though some of the changes that are seen in bone (e.g. decreased length and decreased trabecular mass) must originate in the epiphyseal region. The objectives of the present study were to look for differences in plate parameters and cell and matrix ultrastructure, in proximal tibial epiphyseal plates of space-flown rats.
