Studies of the effects of short-term exposure to weightlessness on rat bone yielded ambiguous results. For instance, Cosmos-1667 experiments revealed distinct signs of osteoporosis of the spongiosa of proximal metaphyses, while the SL-3 flight study of proximal metaphyses of rat humerus bones did not show clear indications of spongy bone osteoporosis. This study was conducted as a comprehensive morphological and biochemical investigation of changes in bones and systems regulating bone metabolism at an early stage of adaptation to microgravity. The experiment focused on bones, blood plasma, and endocrine systems which participate in bone metabolism regulation.
