The Bar Code Reader (BCR) is an off-the-shelf unit that is used to log the crewmembers' food and beverage intake, as well as time. It is also used to identify blood, saliva and urine samples. All items to be logged have bar-coded labels that have been preprogrammed into the BCR. The items are logged simply by scanning the label with the BCR, which also records the date and time. Crewmembers can also log their exercise protocols using the BCR keypad. The BCR is protected by a Nomex carrying case fitted with a Teflon window.
