Expedition 41 began on September 10, 2014, with the undocking of the Soyuz TMA-12M which was the vehicle that returned the Expedition 39/40 crewmembers to Earth. Maksim Surayev, from the Russian Space Agency, became the Commander for this new expedition. The additional space travelers to fill out the crew to six, the Expedition 41/42 crewmembers, arrived late September 2014.

The Expedition 40/41 crewmembers were Commander Maksim Surayev, RSA; and Flight Engineers Gregory R. Wiseman, NASA, and Alexander Gerst, ESA.

The Expedition 41/42 crewmembers were Flight Engineers Aleksandr Samokutyayev, RSA, Yelena Serova, RSA and Barry E. Wilmore, NASA.

Expedition 41 ended on November 9, 2014, when the Soyuz TMA-13M returned CDR Surayev and Flight Engineers Wiseman and Gerst to Earth. The Souz landed in Kazakhstan. These three crewmembers arrived at the International Space Station on May 29, 2014, and spent more than five months ins space conducting research and manitenance activities.
