Artificial Gravity (Fractional Gravity)

NASA's Artificial Gravity (AG) Project was a major undertaking in artificial gravity research at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston. The AG Pilot Study exposed test subjects to an extended 6 degree head down bed rest, a process that simulates the effects of microgravity on a human. Subjects were spun an hour a day on the Short-Radius Centrifuge (SRC) up to a force equal to 2.5 times the Earth's gravity. For the first time, researchers studied how artificial gravity may serve as a countermeasure for the body as a whole to prolonged simulated weightlessness. Parameters such as bone loss, muscle atrophy, balance control, and oxygen consumption will then be compared in order to research ways of mitigating the impact on astronauts' physiology. Other potential benefits from these studies extend to population groups on Earth, such as bedridden patients.
